Early Life

Shaquille O’Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 6, 1972, to parents Lucille O’Neal and Joe Toney. The father of Shaquille was addicted to prescription drugs. He was sent to prison for drug use when O’Neal was an infant. The couple never got married, and his father left shortly after Shaq’s birth after being released from jail. 

His father separated O’Neal over many years. When he was two years old, his mother married Phillip Harrison, a sergeant in the U.S. Army.
